Recommend a Vitamin Supplement for use in Pregnancy |
|
....and not Pregnacare. I'm looking for one with no or only a little Iron supplement as it makes me constipated. (My Iron levels are fine anyway).
I'm not pregnany but hopefully will be soon.
Any GF suggestions wlecome.
Thanks

Hi ALM
I think that Sona do one - called Balance and listed as Pregnancy and Coeliac suitable: http://www.sona.ie/product.asp?id=291
It does contain 129% Iron but I think that as the baby grows it depletes your iron stores, so many pregnant women end up iron deficient even if they are not normally, just because of the increased need for iron during the pregnancy.
Good luck with it

No thanks but that would be too much Iron. Last 2 pregnancies I did without Iron supplements til 30+ wks and then just took Spatone. (I regulary checked my Iron levels before that and they were always ok, so Iron supplement not needed).

Sorry ALM - I don't know of any others, all the ones I saw had at least 100% RDA iron.

Hi Alm,
these might be suitable.
Comes in two stages, product up to 13th week and then another product for remainder of pregnancy.

Alternatively, you could just focus on taking folic acid until you are passed first trimester and then see whether you should build up your iron reserves. Third pregnancy might take a greater toll on you than previous two.
All the best with your plans!

Thanks dan, that looks promising. Would you recommend these? Just not sure about ordering stuff online unless someone has personally used them and found them ok........just being cautious

Hi ALM,
sorry no I haven't used them myself.
You should be able to find Femibion in the shops as it is available wholesale to Health Food shops. Just go into your nearest shop see if they can order it in for you.

Ah thanks good idea, will do that. Was thinking from your username you hadn't used them personally but was hoping maybe your wife had or you were a consultant!!

Hi ALM,
I actually saw these in Boots today.
Usernames can be very misleading, so don't read anything into that
I made a very personal decision on this pregnancy not to take vitamin supplements because of multiple allergies and previous mcs. Have been really well, as is baby, and only just started Spatone for iron. But this approach might not be suitable for everybody.

Thats exactly what I did on my last 2 pregnancies to be honest with no problems but I just felt I should take something as I've only been diagnosed Coeliac recently and things might be a bit different this time round, though I don't seem to have any vitamin difficiencies. Will be out & about today so will have a look in Boots for them.
Thanks again

Thanks curlywurly but I think there is Iron added to the Santogen ones?
I got Berroca in the end- GF, Iron free and contain B vits. so that should keep me going!!

Results of my ferritin test came back and with a level of 10 I'm nearly anaemic!!! Ironic reading this post! Doc initially did a FBC and told me all was fine (didn't give the figures, later found out it was 11.7) but they only picked it up last week in the Ferritin test- so I actually need Iron afterall! I've been taking 2 x Galfer since last week and so far no problems- maybe it was other issues and not the Galfer/Pregnare that caused the constipation last time I took them, so I take back all I said before about needing no Iron- I am a classic coeliac afterall!
