tax relief |
|
i have noticed that on the coelic society home page it say the we are entitled to tax relief on gluten free food. There is a link to the revenue web page but i was unable to open this page. does anyone know the address? has any one actually claimed tax relief, it seems like it could be more hassle than its worth, savin all the reciepts and adding everthing up??

At the end of the year you can claim on the Med 1 form, along with your other medical expenses. Keep all your receipts throughout the year for specifically made gf food and add them all up and submit the amount - you keep the receipts in case of an audit at a later stage. Relief is given at the 20% tax rate. You also need to inform the revenue of your condition with a letter from your gp saying that you have CD and special dietary requirements which they keep on file. It's really not a hassle, especially if you are claiming for gp visits, meds etc.

You may be able to get GP/Doc to print off a one page receipt with all your visits on it.
Also the Med 1 form can be done online, www.revenue.ie for more details.

Can you claim tax back on GF food bought in UK in Ireland? Sainsburys do a great GF range and we were thinking of stocking up when up North.

Hi ALM
just got a reply back from the contact we have in the tax office and indeed you can claim for items bought outside the state.
The main point as always is to keep your receipts.
Happy shopping.

Tks for checking that out. That's great news I didn't include it in my previous Med 1's but will do in future.

Hi SandraT,
You cant claim for Rice Cakes as they are naturally GF. You can only claim for foods that are specially made for coeliac's, like pasta and bread.
Coeliac, thats great about claiming for foods bought outside of the state, thanks

Thanks Coeliac for looking into that, great to know that.
with regards the annual spend, could you just use clubcard statements (once you register with the supermarket co. as a Coeliac) to show total GF spend per year, or do you still need receipts as well? All the major chains seem to be offering this service.

You do still need to keep your receipts. The advantage of the supermarket certificate is not having to trawl through them adding up. However you may still have receipts from other healthcare expenses (GP, Prescriptions, Physio etc.) or food bought in health food stores or pharmacies, that would be added on.
