€5 for 500K

Following last year’s successful €5 for 500K fundraising campaign, the Coeliac Society has engaged with multiple research projects.

Some of these have helped raise awareness of coeliac disease amongst politicians, medical professionals and undiagnosed coeliac sufferers.

The Society had four of our research posters accepted to the International Coeliac Disease Symposium 2022 in Sorrento. This conference is held every two years, where leading scientists, physicians, health allied professionals, patient groups and industry come together to share information and collaborate with one another.

Your donations enable us to continue to carry out research, which will contribute to the increase of diagnosis, improve treatment pathways, and further support those living with the disease.

Raising Funds for the Research of Coeliac Disease

At the Coeliac Society of Ireland we have launched our €5 for 500K campaign, which can be found here, to raise much needed funds for research that will enhance the charity’s ability to advocate for the estimated 500,000 people who suffer from coeliac disease and gluten intolerance in Ireland.

The society is primarily funded through membership subscriptions and some state funding. The additional financial support that comes from those who participate in fundraising events throughout the year enables the society to carry out research projects that otherwise would not happen.

This research is vital to providing the information to advocate for change on behalf of our members and the wider gluten free community. This research is used to advise healthcare practitioners and form arguments to government bodies on the issues of living with coeliac disease and the high incidence of undiagnosed coeliac disease in Ireland.

Following last year’s successful fundraising campaign, the Coeliac Society has engaged with multiple research projects, some of which have helped raise awareness of coeliac disease among politicians, medical professionals, and undiagnosed coeliac sufferers.

Some Projects that got started from €5for500K 2022 Fundraising.

Research project

Status

Investigating Oat Sensitivity in people with Coeliac Disease in Ireland.

Completed and will be used in the society to better advise members with oat sensitivity. Hope to present research findings at the next ICDS.

Prevalence of Coeliac disease alongside other autoimmune conditions

Going forward for publication 2023.

Literature review on the prevalence of neurological conditions in coeliac disease

Completed and will be used as a basis for a larger research project in the future.

A literature on folic acid requirements and intakes during pregnancy in those with coeliac disease

Completed and will be used the society to better advise members.

What the status means – why they are at this stage:

  • Going forward for publication – we would like to publish the study in an academic paper. This will give the research more solid and recognition so that it will gain more recognition amongst health care professionals and the Government, which in turn will lead to better diagnosis and treatment of coeliac disease and better supports for coeliacs. If something is going for publication, results cannot be released until the study is published. It is just part of rules of publication in scientific papers.
  • ICDS symposium - The ICDS (INTERNATIONAL CELIAC DISEASE SYMPOSIUM) is a worldwide conference that takes place every 2 years. Scientists, clinicians, health allied professionals and associations gather to discuss current knowledge alongside recent and emerging research in the area of coeliac disease and gluten-related diseases. Some of our work to date will be presented as a poster at the conference

Please also note that for some research projects we may not release results immediately even when completed. This is because we are using this research to better inform our advice or to strengthen our arguments with stakeholders. This information will eventually become publicly available when it is advantageous for our members to do so.
