Our Research
Since 2020 the Society has increased its research efforts significantly and is now recognised as a key contributor to global research into coeliac disease, both in relation to treatment for the disease and its socio-economic impact, particularly regarding healthcare costs, quality of life, and long-term health outcomes for patients. The Society’s research also extends to understanding the broader implications of living with coeliac disease, such as the psychological and social challenges faced by patients, and its effect on families, workplaces, and communities.
Current Research
Over the past several years, the Coeliac Society of Ireland has significantly expanded its research efforts, focusing on a variety of key areas impacting those with coeliac disease. Our work has delved into the clinical aspects of coeliac disease, including screening, diagnosis, and the long-term management of the condition.
We have also explored the socio-economic impact of coeliac disease, assessing healthcare costs, quality of life, and the challenges faced by patients in adhering to a gluten-free diet.
Additionally, the Society has conducted research into patient experiences, addressing psychological and social factors, the transition from pediatric to adult care, and the broader implications for families and communities. Our evidence-based insights have contributed to national and international discussions on healthcare policy, treatment approaches, and improving the standard of care for individuals living with coeliac disease.
Clinical Trials
Clinical trials play a crucial role in helping researchers determine if new treatments for coeliac disease are safe and effective. While it may feel daunting to participate in a clinical trial, it’s important to understand that all treatments approved by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) must first undergo rigorous testing in clinical trials. By taking part in a clinical trial, you can directly contribute to the advancement of coeliac disease treatment, benefiting not only yourself but also the wider coeliac community in Ireland and beyond.
